CRABS Nebula Tournament

CRABS Historical Fencing will be hosting an open steel longsword, open steel sabre, and beginner foam sabre tournament Saturday Oct 25th to Sunday Oct 26th in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia. 

​

We are proud to be expanding the historical fencing tournament scene in Atlantic Canada as a yearly event.

Divisions and Safety Gear Requirements

  • Open Steel Longsword

    • open to all genders

    • participants aged 13+

    • participants must have the following gear:

      • historical fencing mask with overlay

      • hard throat protection (gorget)

      • historical fencing jacket with no exposed skin

      • hard elbow protection

      • forearms optional but highly encouraged

      • heavy grade gloves  ( clamshell style gloves ), examples include : sparring gloves, SPES Heavy, HF Black Prince, five finger heavy glovers will also be permitted such as SG Infinity, Gabriel gloves etc

      • thigh protection optional but encouraged

      • groin protection optional but encouraged

      • hard knee and shin protection

      • no exposed skin

  • Open Steel Sabre

    • open to all genders

    • participants aged 13+

    • participants must have the following gear:

      • historical fencing mask with overlay

      • hard throat protection (gorget)

      • historical fencing jacket with no exposed skin

      • hard elbow protection

      • forearms optional but highly encouraged

      • medium grade gloves for a closed shell saber ( examples include: Thokks, SupFen impact gloves, Red Dragons at personal risk ), higher grade gloves for a more open guard ( clamshell style gloves ) 

      • thigh protection optional but encouraged

      • groin protection optional but encouraged

      • hard knee and shin protection

      • no exposed skin

  • Beginner Foam Sabre

    • open to all genders​

    • participants aged 13+

    • if you have competed in a steel category for any tournament, you are not eligible for this category

    • if you have been fencing for more than 2 years, you are not eligible for this category

    • participants must have the following gear:

      • historical fencing mask with overlay​

      • hard throat protection (gorget)

      • plastron (chest protector) is optional but encouraged

      • light grade gloves (examples: black Kevlar gloves, Lacrosse/hockey gloves, Red Dragons, mechanic's gloves)

      • groin protection optional but encouraged

Weapon Requirements

  • Open Steel Longsword​

    • only feder style blades allowed, no blunts

    • accepted brands include Kvetun, Castille, Regenyei, Sigi, Poker, VB

    • non-listed brands subject to approval, contact us directly at crabshistoricalfencing@gmail.com and we will update our accepted list

    • makers have a variety of blade stiffness options, fencers are expected to control their blade to keep opponents safe, fencers with stiffer blades are expected to exhibit more control in the thrust or risk penalties/expulsion from the tournament

    • blade length maximum is 105 cm, cross guard maximum 28 cm, ring guards allowed, no lighter than 1300 grams

    • sword rental is available at $20/fencer

  • Open Steel Sabre

    • military sabres only, no broadswords, no dueling sabers, no gymnasium sabers, no sideswords, no smallswords, no arming swords

    • accepted brands include Kvetun, Castille, Regenyei, Sigi, Krieger, Poker

    • non-listed brands subject to approval, contact us directly at crabshistoricalfencing@gmail.com and we will update our accepted list

    • sword rental is available at $20/fencer

Venue and Dinner

Our tournament will be taking place at the Stewiacke Community Center (111 NS-2, Stewiacke, NS B0N 2J0). The Saturday dinner will also be taking place at the community center. We will have full access to the kitchen for the entire day for anyone who would like to make use of the facilities. The community center entrance is at the back of the fire hall on the upper level.

Registration

We are offering 3 weapon categories this year: Foam Sabre, Steel Sabre and Steel Longsword. Tournament registration fee is $50 for one weapon category. If you are competing in both steel sabre and steel longsword the registration fee is $80. Additional fees exist for weapon rental. Registration will be considered complete upon completion of the registration form and payment. Once completed the fencer will receive an email confirmation guaranteeing their spot. Categories will start at 16 fencers/weapon event. Fencers signing up past max capacity will be put on a waitlist and contacted in the event of a drop-out or expansion of the category. Payment will not be asked to hold a spot on the waitlist.
